City of Lexington, NC Multi-Modal Transportation Station Area Plan
In 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the City of Lexington, NC a TIGER grant to prepare a Multi-Modal Transportation Station Area Plan (SAP) for the City’s Depot District:
The purpose of the Project is to develop a multi-modal facility to serve the community’s transportation needs and induce redevelopment within the Depot District to further revitalize the City’s uptown area. As a multi-modal facility, the Project will serve passenger rail, local and regional transit services, taxi, bicycle, and pedestrian networks. As a community resource, the Project will create an anchor for redevelopment and economic revitalization of the Depot District by transforming a vacant and dormant warehouse district into a viable mixed-use activity center.
With the TIGER funds, the City completed a SAP, including final engineering plans and an Environmental Assessment (EA) for: (1) a new Passenger Station Building; (2) necessary and adjacent railroad improvements; and (3) nearby sidewalk and bicycle streetscapes improvements. FRA signed the EA on September 1, 2016. After a 30-day public review and comment period, FRA signed a Finding of No Significant Impact on February 9, 2017.
