Failures of glazing retention mechanisms on passenger trains have led to multiple injuries and fatalities in rollover-type accidents over the last several decades. This research effort reviewed global standards for glazing system design and performance, as well as modes of retention failures under accident conditions, and proposed design concepts to improve retention performance and test methods to evaluate the same. Two of the design concepts were prototyped and evaluated using three test methods. The results were used to propose additional performance requirements that address glazing retention capacity.
