The industry safety standard for fixed workstation tables on passenger railcars, APTA PR-CS-S-018-13, draft Rev. 2, provides two options for test procedures and requirements when evaluating crashworthy tables for protecting passengers during a collision. MGA Research Corporation performed six dynamic sled table tests per Option A and three dynamic sled tests plus three quasi-static table tests per Option B of the safety standard. Tests on donated workstation tables were performed according to each option of the standard to evaluate the safety equivalency of the options with respect to the risk of injury to the chest and abdomen for a passenger impacted by a table during a rail accident.
