Railroad Sick Leave Information
As of December 2024, approximately 90 percent of Class I freight railroad workers have paid sick leave, a significant improvement from about 5% who had coverage at the end of 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) have encouraged each Class I freight railroad—BNSF Railway (BNSF), Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), Canadian National Railway (CN), CSX Transportation (CSX), Norfolk Southern (NS), and Union Pacific (UP)—to engage and reach agreements with each of their unions to make paid sick leave without penalty available to all employees. Progress made to provide paid sick leave to all employees at each Class I freight railroad can be found below.
