UAS Public Notices
Overview
FRA uses Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, commonly referred to as drones) across the United States to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its inspection teams. These systems play a vital role in various tasks, including highway-rail grade crossing inspections, sight-distance evaluations, crash investigations, trespassing detection, and transportation infrastructure assessments.
UAVs are equipped with advanced technologies and sensors such as high-resolution cameras, electro-optical imagery, infrared sensors, and other specialized tools. These features enable FRA inspectors to identify railroad trespassing hotspots with precision. The insights gathered allow FRA to collaborate with local municipalities and railroads to address trespassing concerns, creating safer and more secure rail environments.
