Broad Agency Announcement
FRA’s Office of Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) is dedicated to conducting research that improves railroad safety, promotes innovation, and supports national rail transportation policy. These efforts further U.S. Department of Transportation Strategic Goals, FRA’s mission, and the larger rail industry.
FRA releases a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) each year to solicit concept papers and proposals on a variety of research topics to improve the safety and efficiency of U.S. freight and passenger rail operations. The BAA provides opportunities for government organizations, industry, and academia to collaborate and conduct applied research. RD&T evaluates all submissions.
Our research focuses on five main areas:
• Track
• Rolling Stock
• Train Control and Communication
• Human Factors
• Railroad Systems Issues, including Workforce Development
Please see this year's BAA for a full list of topic areas for consideration. The deadline for concept papers is January 16, 2024.
